Constructed in just under two years, the Simon Fraser University Sustainable Energy Engineering Building welcomed its first students in August 2019. The Sustainable Energy Engineering program is Western Canada’s first accredited undergraduate engineering program and is now housed in a world-class LEED Gold living laboratory facility.
The SFU SE3P Building will receive heat from the City of Surrey’s district energy system while the atrium will be used as a large return air plenum space that will reduce overall fan power and take advantage of the natural draft throughout the five-level atrium.
The project has garnered numerous awards, including seven from the Vancouver Regional Construction Association.
The building includes one level of underground parking as well as varied sized classrooms, teaching and research labs, faculty, graduate and administrative offices, collaboration and study spaces, recreational facilities, student central service spaces, and plant maintenance facilities. A 400-seat lecture hall situated on the southwestern portion of the ground floor will serve the full SFU Surrey campus and is also intended to serve the broader Surrey community.
Canem was responsible for the electrical services, fire alarm systems, and security services on this accelerated schedule project.
