HISTORY
For over 60 years, Canem has remained mindful of the core values and entrepreneurial spirit upon which it was founded by Fred H. Wyder on March 17, 1960. What started as a humble operation based out of the founder’s basement is now one of Canada’s most respected and forward-thinking companies.
Canem pioneered programming techniques unique to the electrical and mechanical industries in Canada and truly set itself apart. In 1966, Canem was one of the first companies in Canada to have computerized estimating.
Between 1967 and 1974, the company experienced a period of tremendous change and growth. Wyder purchased Peterson Electrical Construction Co. Ltd. to expand into high voltage transmission work. This expansion accelerated an already strong presence in Vancouver and opened doors to the Edmonton, Calgary, and Winnipeg markets. At the end of the 1960s, Wyder was purchased by the Bentall Group.
The seventies were a time of sweeping changes. On January 2, 1974, Wyder Electric, Peterson Electrical, and Tryco Installations amalgamated as one company dubbed Canem Systems Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bentall Holdings Limited. During this time, the Design/Build approach was increasingly emphasized in Canem and, thanks to Fred Wyder’s early introduction, has been a hallmark of Canem’s success throughout the years.
